    I believe the SMTP issue was being caused by a connection refused error. To debug SMTP, enable logs to level 5 (https://www.clientexec.com/members/knowledge-base/maintenance-~77/how-to-enable-logging~80) and you'll be able to see the SMTP traffic, and any errors.
